What is the purpose of this product?
Kids need practice decoding words – and sometimes, words on a flash card or on a list are boring. And, let’s be honest, if kids are bored – they aren’t learning! These easy to prep games are a great way for students to get non-threatening practice at decoding words. Use them for centers or your small group rotations. Maybe even print a copy for students and send them home to play with their families for homework!
What makes these games unique?
There’s tons of phonics worksheets and activities out there. I’m passionate about creating and using 100% decodable phonics materials in my classroom, so I want to be able to share those with you. These games are unique because
- they are decodable (each unit builds on previous units)
- they are systematic (You can find 8 total units of these games from CVC words to R Controlled vowels)
- they are 5 minute prep (Ok, if you laminate them it might take you a few extra minutes but if you simply print and cut on cardstock you can be done in no time!)
What do you mean they are systematic?
- Each unit builds on previous units. If students can read CVC words, they are ready for unit 2 which is short vowel blends. When you get to unit 3, students will see short vowel digraphs and the words may also include some blends as well. You can have students working on whatever unit is appropriate for their needs.
How can I use these games for differentiation?
In total, this line of resources includes 8 units. Every unit has the exact same games in it, just with different words. This means, you can easily group students by the phonics skills they need and then give them all the same game but with different words. For instance, every student in the room can be playing “Yahoo!”, but the words they use will be different. No group will realize that their words are easier or harder than the other groups!
How much prep is required for this resource?
- Every game in this resource is low prep using straight line cuts. I’ve made these games as easy as possible for teachers. After a quick trip to the paper cutter, you are ready to go. Seriously, you can have a game ready in under 5 minutes!
