Why are there different books?
- Book A and B:
- Students write responses in this book
- You will need one copy for each student you are assessing
- Book A contains three versions (beginning middle and end of year assessments) for passages written at about the first grade level
- Book B contains three versions (beginning middle and end of year assessments) for passages written at about the third grade level
- Book C and D:
- Directions to read to students
- Copy of student assessments so teacher can read the sentences for students who require a reading accommodation
- You only need one copy regardless of how many students you are assessing.
- Book C contains answer keys for the first grade passages
- Book D contains answer keys for the third grade passages
What level are the passages written at?
There are two different levels included – beginning, middle, and end of year assessments for text written at about the first grade level and beginning, middle, and end of year assessment for text written at about the third grade level. In total, you are receiving 54 passages and question sets: 9 skills x 2 levels x 3 times of year = 54 passages.
In other words, you are receiving a first grade beginning of the year assessment, a first grade middle of the year assessment, a first grade end of the year assessment, a third grade beginning of the year assessment, a third grade middle of the year assessment, and a third grade end of the year assessment.
Please note: The grade levels are an approximation and you are not limited to using these only with students in first/third grade. My intent was to provide a resource for both lower and upper elementary students. I have used these assessments with students from kindergarten-5th grade.
